6th Belugas Lorne Winter Pier to Pub

6th Belugas Lorne Winter Pier to Pub

More Belugas are braving the swim every year …

It’s a pilgrimage known to most now: the annual Winter Pier to Pub. In groups of four or five we transcended the Great Ocean Road and descended upon Lorne.

The temperature was nine degrees. There were clouds- grey in nature, and indeed a light sun shower. In usual tradition, when the commencement of the swim was imminent the clouds parted and the sun shone. Waves pounded. Perhaps a metre high rendering the usual entry via the boat ramp precarious. Instead we entered via the pier.

Leap of faith into the icy waters below!

In pairs we hurled ourselves over the edge- airborne for a moment before an abrupt, freezing plunge into deep cold water.

In that moment the air was ripped from my chest and a stabbing pain stung my throat. The cold water grabbed at my exposed digits- strangling them for any warmth they held. In that moment I questioned why I had again consented but surrounded by blue bubbles and next to Raoul it seemed the only way forward was towards the pub.

Accompanied by sea gulls and surfers we bobbed along. Once acclimatised the reason for participating becomes apparent. Wrapped in the cool water, emerged in a sea of bubbles, surrounded by blue and green there is a strange sense of tranquility. A familiar rhythm takes over the arms and legs as they turn and kick to propel us towards the beach. Upon arrival any sense of tranquility evaporated as the pounding waves crashed down upon us throwing us towards the shore. And there we were. 21 Belugas- beached and cold!

Yet again Qdos warmed us and fed us- now the familiar finale to our Winter Adventures. Our thanks to Gill and her staff for their hospitality. Our thanks also to the kookaburra for not stealing anyone’s lunch.

Good food and good company. What else could you want for?

This year we welcomed first-timers Antony, Emily, Owen, John, Peter and Richard to our adventures- congratulations on surviving the icy journey! Commendations must also go to Antony, Anthony, Ken, Kirsty, Paul and Raoul who braved the water in togs only! Thank you everyone for a wonderful day…. 364 sleeps until our next Winter Pier to Pub!

Ocean Grove Inaugural K-Rock Swim, 2017

Ocean Grove Inaugural K-Rock Swim, 2017

January 29 marked the inaugural K-Rock Ocean Grove swim. Enthused by the preceding day’s blue water challenge a small contingentcy of Belugas found our way to Ocean Grove to battle the surf! The scene differed from that to which we are accustomed, with a live guitarist calming our nerves with his tranquil tunes.

Raoul, Janet and myself completed the 2.5km long course. Albeit the waves were large but once beyond their encompassing swell the swim was superb: a well marked course, clear water and sunshine! Raoul again choosing not to don the wetsuit swam a very impressive 21st of the men…. and while my time may have been marginally faster Raoul assures me this merely reflects my wearing a wetsuit!

Our Beluga friends shone in the 1.2km event. Anthony Purcell and Sue Cox both swam 2nd in their age groups, with Sandy 5th, Ale 6th and Liz 6th in their respective events. The show however was stolen by wave-riding super surfer Tracy, who stole the lead and gold metal, riding a wave past her competitors.

Although not (yet) a Beluga, special mention should go to Xaiver Purcell winning his age group…. he will in good time be known as fast Xavier.

Fierce rivals … good mates.

And the winner: Raoul (by 0.6 of a second)! All round the Belugas impressed though, Raoul’s 400 time was 5’41.84 a PB and club record. Duncan came in at 6’51 and held the record for 6minutes until Vito came in at 6’36. Wayne earned a club record for his 400 free with a time of 6’30. Some brave souls impressed us with their 50 fly, Mike, Raoul and Brad all earning club records! True to his (champion) form Mike earned another club record in the 200 backstroke swimming an impressive 1’25!

Finally to round off the day the men’s medley relay performed spectacularly…. Coming fourth in Australia! We had Mike swimming backstroke, Paul with breast, Brad swimming fly and Raoul swimming free.

Winter Pier to Pub 2015

Winter Pier to Pub 2015

June 27 brought with it excitement and delight as we embarked on our fourth annual Winter Pier to Pub. Twenty swimmers and eight supporters trekked to Lorne; greeted by blue skies and translucent waters.

Impossibly perfect conditions for our winter swim …

While scenically spectacular, the waters were frosty at 13 degrees, requiring us to rug up in wetsuits and neoprene caps. A notable exception to this, Anthony Ferguson, was brave (or perhaps just mad) enough to undertake the 1.2km course in bathers alone. With a staggered start we swam in pairs, edging our way, two Belugas at a time through the tumbling surf.

Brrr! One Beluga heads purposefully into the freezing water while a few others appear still to be making up their minds …

As we turned the point – the pier behind us, the pub in front – the circling swell assembled some spectacularly high waves to carry us to shore. Finishing the course together there we were a pod of Belugas porposing in the sun flecked waves.

After recovering from varying degrees of hypothermia we celebrated our success over lunch and wine at Qdos Arts.

Slowly defrosting Belugas relax and start to remember why they did the swim in the first place … the cosy log fire, lovely food and beverages at Qdos!

The vibrant gallery provided the ideal venue to reflect not only on the swim but also our wonderful diversity as a collective; we are united by a shared love of swimming, but each member of our club brings a unique piece of the puzzle which together unites to form an eclectic jigsaw.

Thanks must go to Anthony Ferguson for generously sponsoring our Winter Pier to Pub T-shirts, to Vito Muré for his wonderful design and to our coach Kerry for coming to support us (in addition to her continued encouragement and guidance). We’re already looking forward to next year’s swim, when the inimitable Tim Walker will lead us into the water to rapturous applause!
